The Catholic fraternity in Kenya is mourning the passing on of Rev. Bishop Silus Silvanus Njiru, Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Meru who died of coronavirus today in Turin Italy. Reports from Italy indicate that Bishop Njiru passed on today at Rivoli Hospital after being admitted on April 25.
According to an April 28 statement by Fr. Pedro Jose da Silva Louvo, Secretary General of Consolata Missionaries, Bishop Njiru was on April 25, taken to Rivoli Hospital, due to Covid-19 infection, where he passed away on 28 April 2020 at 0030hrs.
Report from the Catholic Information Service for Africa Facebook page, Bishop Silas Njiru was residing at the Blessed Joseph Allamano house in Alpignano, Turin Italy. The late Bishop Njiru was born on October 10, 1928 in Meru where he has served all his life and worked up the ranks to become the Bishop Emeritus. On December 17, 1955 he was ordained Priest for the Catholic Diocese of Meru. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Meru, and Titular Bishop odd Maturba in October 2, 1975. In December 1976, he was appointed Bishop of the Catholic diocese of Meru. He served in Meru until his retirement on March 18, 2004.
He died aged 92 years after getting infected by the novel coronavirus infection. The disease which evolved from Wuhan City in China has infected thousands of people and killed thousands of them. Coronavirus has affected many countries, almost all countries across the world. Italy is among countries that have been hit the hardest by the novel Covid-19.
